Pet Medicine and Veterinary Drugs

NSAID (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories) SIDE EFFECTS

Pet Medicine and Veterinary Drugs, and what pet parents should know about NSAID's and their side effects and help with finding alternatives. Peopletopets is committed to providing your pets and you with all natural health products. We want to help educate and provide as much knowledge as possible on the benefits of natural health solutions without harmful side effects.

The American Food and Drug Administration has called for client information sheets to be made available to pet owners when Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatories are prescribed. These include the side-effects that can arise. The following data comes from the FDA web site http://www.fda.gov (I have added some meaning's in plain english of certain terms).

Veterinarians should discuss the benefits as well as the risks of the Pet Medicine and Veterinary Drugs with their clients when prescribing an NSAID. Every year millions of doses of medications are prescribed for dogs with good reason—but many adverse reactions occur. Most adverse reactions are mild, but some result in permanent impairment or even death. If the client can recognize a possible reaction and stop the medication while seeking veterinary attention for the dog, the client may make the difference between a good outcome and a disaster.

Your Veterinarian should give you the client information sheet or a copy of any pet medicine he gives. It is your right to know what the possible side effects are and what to look for or to decide if you want it at all. ASK about alternatives to the pet medicine they have prescribed . Has your Vet ever told you about the Risks of NSAID? Have you ever ASKED, if not you should.

Your dog depends on you, protect him or her by educating yourself about these drugs or any other pet medicine they are taking.

RIMADYL, This is the most NSAID recommended by Veterinarians, with a generic name of carprofen.

Rimadyl is indicated for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and for the control of postoperative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries in dogs.

There is growing evidence showing that the drug has serious side effects. Some dogs have died due to the unexpectedly rapid onset of side effects, and/or because the drug's side effects were not recognized by the veterinarian or the pet parent.

Adverse reactions from Rimadyl may include:

• decreased appetite
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• dark or tarry stools
• increased water consumption
• increased urination
• pale gums due to anemia
• yellowing of gums, skin or white of the eye due to jaundice
• lethargy
• incoordination
• seizures
• behavioral changes

Serious Adverse Reactions associated with this pet medicine class can occur without warning.

Gastrointestinal: Vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, inappetence (lack of appetite), melena (the discharge of black, tarry, bloody stools, usually from gastrointestinal bleeding), hematemesis (the vomiting of blood), gastrointestinal ulceration, gastrointestinal bleeding, pancreatitis.

Hepatic (pertaining to the liver): Inappetence (lack of appetite), vomiting, jaundice, acute hepatic toxicity, hepatic enzyme elevation, abnormal liver function, hyperbilirubinemia (an abnormally high level of bilirubin (a reddish bile pigment, resulting from the wearing down of the cells in the liver) in the blood, manifested by jaundice, anorexia, and malaise, occurring in association with liver disease and certain hemolytic anemias), bilirubinuria (the presence of bilirubin in the urine).

Neurologic: Ataxia (loss of coordination of the muscles), paresis (a late manifestation of syphilis, characterized by progressive dementia and paralysis), seizures, vestibular signs, disorientation.

Urinary: Hematuria (the presence of blood in the urine; often a symptom of urinary tract disease), polyuria (excessive secretion of urine), polydipsia (excessive thirst), urinary incontinence, urinary tract infection, azotemia (a toxic condition resulting from kidney disease in which there is retention in the bloodstream of waste products normally excreted in the urine), acute renal failure, tubular abnormalities including acute tubular necrosis (a kidney disorder), renal tubular acidosis (a medical condition that involves an accumulation of acid in the body due to a failure of the kidneys) , glucosuria (the presence of abnormally high levels of glucose in the urine).

Behavioral: Sedation, lethargy, hyperactivity, restlessness, aggressiveness.

Hematologic: Immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (a decreased number of platelets in the blood), blood loss anemia, epistaxis (or a nosebleed in plain English).

Dermatologic: Pruritus (itching of the skin), increased shedding, alopecia (loss of hair; baldness), pyotraumatic moist dermatitis (hot spots), necrotizing (death of cells or tissues, panniculitis (Inflammation of the subcutaneous fat especially of the abdominal wall) vasculitis (inflammation of a blood vessel), ventral ecchymosis (the purple or black-and-blue area resulting from a bruise).

Immunologic (the branch of science dealing with the components of the immune system) or hypersensitivity (an excessive or abnormal sensitivity to a substance): Facial swelling, hives, erythema (Redness of the skin caused by dilatation and congestion of the capillaries, often a sign of inflammation or infection).

In rare situations, death has been associated with some of the adverse reactions of this pet medicine listed above.

EtoGesic AND Zubrin have the same side effects of Rimadyl, they are also a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pet medicine.

Rimadyl: News, Views & Advisories

DERAMAXX is another pet medicine of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for controlling the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis.

Side effects involving the digestive system, kidneys or liver may occur. These are normally mild, but may be serious. Pet owners should discontinue therapy and contact their veterinarian immediately if side effects occur using any of these pet medicines.

Serious side effects can, in rare situations, result in death. It is important to stop the medication and contact your veterinarian immediately if you think your dog may have a medical problem or side effect while on DERAMAXX tablets.

Side effects that may indicate your dog is having a problem with DERAMAXX tablets or may have another medical problem:

• Change in drinking or urination
• Decrease in appetite
• Change in behaviour, such as depression or restlessness

METACAM THERAPY also given for relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis

Metacam, like other drugs, may cause some side effects. Serious but rare effects have been reported in dogs taking NSAIDs. Serious side effects can occur with or without warning and in rare situations result in death. The most common NSAID-related side effects generally involve the stomach and liver or kidney problems. Look for the following side effects that can indicate your dog may be having a problem with Metacam or may have another medical problem:

Possible Side Effects That May Occur During Metacam Therapy

• Decrease or increase in appetite
• Vomiting
• Change in bowel movement (such as diarrhea, or black, tarry or bloody stools)
• Change in behavior (such as decreased or increased activity level, incoordination, seizure or aggression)

• Change in skin (redness, scabs, or scratching)

If side effects occur, pet owners should halt Metacam Therapy and contact their veterinarian.

It is imperative that certain pharmaceuticals pet medicines should never be used at the same time. These include other NSAIDS, (Metacam Therapy, Deramaxx, Rimadyl, Etogesic, Zubrin, and others not approved such as aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.), corticosteroids, and other drugs that are either nephrotoxic or hepatotoxic.

Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

The biggest factors in our pets' population health decline over these generations has been the severe overuse of drugs, multiple vaccines and nutrient poor and toxin filled commercial pet foods.

Quality of life is important for pets and people alike. In realizing our pet's value, we are treating our pets better. We are providing better nutrition. That is why I always recommend quality pet food with only natural, wholesome ingredients and nutrient dense with vitamins, minerals, fats and fatty acids which are essential for the optimal health of your pet. Life's Abundance!

We have also failed to address the underlying cause of disease by only suppressing the symptoms with antibiotics, cortisone and related NSAID drugs, so the disease progresses and goes deeper. Most of these illnesses revolve around breakdown in our pets' immune systems, and include chronic skin/ear allergies, digestive upset, thyroid, adrenal, pancreatic disorders, seizures, gum/ teeth problems, degenerative arthritis, kidney and liver failure, and cancer across all ages and breeds.

Alternatives to NSAID's

Animals with arthritis/degenerative joint disease can similarly benefit from improved nutrition and especially from omega 3 fatty acid supplements with chondriotin, glucosamine and MSM rather than being put on long acting prednisone or Rymidal. Steroid drugs have many serious consequences including increased susceptibility to infection, diabetes, muscular weakness and osteoporosis, Cushing's disease, increased appetite, agitation and aggression.

This is a great product. Why give harmful pet medicines when you can give them something natural?

At present, there are several hip and joint formulas marketed for companion animals. Unfortunately, most of these products treat the joint as an isolated goal; it is for this reason that they do not work as well as they could. Our Agility supplement is a holistic formula, which means that it takes into account the needs of the whole body, including all the parts that work with the joints.

This formula helps maintain healthy joint cartilage and connective tissue, and to aid in the production of healthy synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints. This supplement features Glucosamine and MSM, and is a natural, holistic, multi-action joint support formula containing scientifically-tested ingredients.

Glucosamine helps maintain and promote joint and connective tissue health. It has been shown to be essential in the healthy development and ongoing maintenance of connective tissue and synovial fluid. Research studies indicate that Glucosamine supports healthy joint flexibility, mobility and lubrication. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a natural source of organic sulfur, an element vital to the maintenance of healthy joints, bones, ligaments and tendons. Agility
