Dental Care for Pets and Healthy Solutions

Dental care for pets and health sources are available from Peopletopets who is committed to providing your pets and you with all natural health products. We want to help educate and provide as much knowledge as possible on the benefits of natural health solutions.

One of the most over looked pet care problems by pet owners is periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is quite common, especially in older pets. Contrary to popular belief, dental disease doesn't just affect our older pets, but puppies and kittens, too. Dental disease can destroy all of the supporting structures of the mouth. Periodontal disease can also seep into the bloodstream affecting other parts of the body and making a pet ill.

Plaque and tartar is made up of mostly harmful bacteria. If allowed to build up and cause gingivitis and other forms of disease in the oral cavity the bacteria and its toxins will enter the body via the bleeding gums and can wreak havoc on the heart, kidneys, liver, and even the brain. Some veterinarians believe that good oral hygiene alone will add up to 4 years of longevity to the average dog and cat. Does that mean you have to take your pet to have his or her teeth clean? No! Good oral health and dental care can begin at home.

Here are some possible signs of dental disease:

-Bad breath
-Discolored teeth
-Red or swollen gums
-Loss of teeth
-Difficulty in chewing and eating
-Weight loss
-Broken or missing teeth
-Nasal discharge
-Blood in the saliva
-Drooling
-Tearing or swelling below one eye

Periodontal disease starts with plaque. This is the white film that accumulates on our teeth. If the plaque is not removed through regular teeth brushing, it will harden and turn into tartar. As the tartar builds, the plaque continues to accumulate and infect the gums.

Proper dental care can help prevent with but cure periodontal disease.

We all brush our own teeth but we sometimes forget that our pets teeth needs brushing also. Good hygiene starts when we are young. As parents we can't wait for our children to cut their first tooth. Okay of course the crying and fussiness we can do without. We introduce them to the tooth brush and condition them to the practice good oral hygiene, conducive to the preservation of health, as cleanliness.

As pet parents we should do the same. Natural pet care can begin with simply brushing your pets teeth.

First find a quiet time for both you and your pet.

Introduce you pet slowly. For the first few times don't use a tooth brush. Use your finger and gently rub the outside of their cheeks. After they are comfortable with that wrap your finger with a piece of gauze and gently start rubbing their teeth. You may just get one tooth done at a time and that is okay just be patient, each time you will get further.

Introducing the tooth brush, first put a little tooth paste on your finger. Refrain from using human or baking soda toothpaste because it can upset their stomachs. There are beef, poultry and peanut-flavored toothpastes out there that animals love.

Over several days increase the number of teeth that you brush. It is important to focus on the rear teeth. That is where plaque and tartar accumulates more often. Dog doesn't seem to have much tartar on the inside surfaces so concentrate more on the outside of their teeth. Build up to 30 seconds per side.

Make each time a pleasurable experience. Stop brushing your pets teeth before he or she becomes upset or fussy. Stopping each session while it is still fun will end up being a better experience for both you and your pet. Praise your pet afterwards and maybe even give them a healthy treat.

Brushing is the best means for dental care and would be good if you could do this at least twice a week. In reality we know that in most busy families that isn’t going to happen so we need to find other ways to keep your pets mouth healthy.

We've learned that sticks, stones and indestructible bones can do a real number on our pets'mouths. A great alternative for pets is giving them crunchy treats. The act of chewing is very natural and not to mention therapeutic for dogs. It can relieve frustration, anxiety, stress and boredom. Crunchy treats work on different levels; they produce saliva, a natural cleaner of teeth. They have a naturally abrasive action. Treats can be wonderful for the oral health of our dogs and cats.

Gourmet Dental Treats

When it comes to teeth and gums, these are popular treats. These treats, unlike any other, contain a patented plaque fighting ingredient found in human oral hygiene products. It works by building a coating around the teeth that discourages the buildup of plaque.

Our Gourmet Dental Treats also contain calcium and phosphorous, which are good for strong bones and teeth. We've also added parsley, an herb rich in chlorophyll that has a natural power to freshen breath. Parsley has many other health benefits, containing vitamins A, B C and K.

Some of the ingredients aside from the ones just mentioned include rolled oats, honey, brown rice, flax seed meal, peanut butter and eggs. Dental Treats for Dogs are not only useful, but delicious. In a university study, dogs chose our Gourmet Dental Treats 4 to 1 over the leading brand of dog treat. The best part about it is dogs don't even know it's good for them! Dental Treats

Beware of rawhide and pig ears:

Some veterinarians warn against feeding rawhide and pig ears because they can contain chemical residues (from chemicals used to remove the fur) that can be harmful to your dog’s health. Also, larger pieces can break off and be swallowed, getting stuck in the intestines and causing blockages. When the rawhide gets wet from the stomach juices, it swells to twice its normal size causing serious stomach blockage. Soft and slick rawhide can also become a choking hazard.
